In the remote highlands of Van Yen, Yen Bai, Vietnam, the sweet, spicy aroma of cinnamon fills the crisp mountain air. This is where generations of farmers have dedicated their lives to cultivating one of the most prized spices in the world — Vietnamese cassia cinnamon. And this is where our story begins.
A Land Rooted in Cinnamon:

The mountains of Yen Bai, especially in the high-altitude areas of Van Yen, are blessed with a cold climate and pure spring water. These natural conditions create the ideal environment for cinnamon trees to thrive. As a result, cinnamon from this region is known for its rich essential oil content (up to 5%), strong aroma, and distinct flavor. It is highly regarded by international buyers for both culinary and medicinal purposes.
Stories from the Farmers:

Meet Ms. Mai, a 46-year-old woman of the Dao ethnic group. Her family has been growing cinnamon for four generations. Despite this deep heritage, life remains difficult. Ms. Mai shared that her family, like many others, must sell fresh cinnamon to local traders at very low prices. These traders then pass the product through multiple layers — sometimes 5 to 8 intermediaries — before it reaches the export market.
“We grow a lot of cinnamon, and we work very hard,” Ms. Mai says. “But we earn so little because the price is controlled by traders.”

Then there is Grandma Piền, 79 years old, also of the Dao ethnic group. She has grown cinnamon since she was a child, born and raised among the cinnamon trees of Van Yen. Despite having eight children who all grow cinnamon, she still works as a laborer during harvest season to make ends meet.
“So many traders come to buy, but they offer very low prices. Then they sell again and again to others before it gets to the exporter,” she shares.
Her story is one of resilience. Cinnamon has been in her life for nearly eight decades. Her children follow the same path, yet income from cinnamon remains limited. To supplement the family’s livelihood, she often works for other farmers during peak seasons — a reflection of the challenges faced by even the most experienced and committed growers in this region.
Breaking the Chain of Middlemen:

For many years, even as producers, we had to sell our cinnamon to intermediaries or big export companies. The biggest challenge was finding direct buyers overseas.
But we knew there had to be a better way.
That is why VinaExport was founded — with a mission to connect our cinnamon directly from farmers to international customers, eliminating unnecessary middlemen.
